View Full Version : French question

Hi!
We are a group a french DA players that have been playing the ancien game for a long time now... and of course everybody here is very pleased with the new system and is multiplying the battles, at home, and in shops from Paris, in order to make this great game popular!
It's a shame DA models are so hard to find here (we use the online shop beacause some news take more than six months to reach our shop!!)...
As we try to make more and more people know the game, we've thought it would be a good idea to make a french website for DA fans, just like Battle-group did with Warmachine (they did very very well and are now THE official french site), showing models, making french cards and translanting some fluff and rules! In fact, a great majority of french players will hesitate to invest in a new game, even a great game, if it is not available partially in french (stupid french guys!! )
So the real question for me here is: what would be allowed to do on a foreign website with DA material, now that you have to pay for the rules??
Would we be allowed to:
- translate the future quick start rules as you don't have to buy the book?
- use photos and drawings from Brom from the DA website?
- translate the stats of the models present in the book (important!!)?
- use pictures from painted models from the official website?
- make french cards?
- translate some fluff from the book, maybe to describe some models?
- ...
Well you can imagine the other questions I think...
We would like to make a website, well updated, well illustrated and that would make people want to play the game... here in France... and maybe elsewhere!
A gallery, a FAQ, rules, stat lines, fluff... :P
I hope we'll be able to do that and present it to the community in some weeks/months!!
Thanks for your answers... if you agree to give me some!
Bye!
Fred

Bonjour Fred.
Welcome to our new world, our Genesis.
The issue of translation is not a new one. If I remember correctly, there is a company that carries Dark Age in France (Grafter will have to confirm this) and they did the "official" french translation of the previous version of the rules. I'd like to find out the intention of this company regarding translations of the new rules before I commit to anything with you and your community.
Having said that, we can definitely discuss a plan of attack for this idea. Please hold on to your interest and this idea. I will let you know how we are going to proceed.
Thanks for the offer, by the way!!

I have the same problems with American guys if the rules aren't even partially in English.

Feels so good to have such a quick answer!!
As far as I know the company that orders DA models to sell it here (Fenryll France), and made some very light support to the game (like giving already printed rules and forcelists to customers) may be stopping selling your products this year ( ), and discontinue the support action!
I don't really know if they are planning to change their mind and think about a french translation for the rules... quick start or even rules from the book!!
But what I'm sure about, is that pictures of OUR painted models, battle reports, home made descripitions, tips, tactics, FAQ maybe and some other ideas are "free" material on which we can start to build the squelleton of our website... and we will use anything YOU guys from the DA team will allow us to use!! :D
And we'll keep playing!! 8)
Feel free to contact me in private if your want to give me some piece of info or advise... or on this thread!
And thank you again!
PS: we already have so much stuff translated for our personal use!! :D :D :D

Fred, I'll give you the basics for now, since you seem so interested.
1. It is important that the printed rulebook, if you own it, should not be translated. This would be copyright infringement. Very bad mojo.
2. I personally will support your efforts to translate anything that is available as a free download. Meaning, if you want to translate the Quickstart Rules and Quickstart Forces, I will allow that to even be brought into the 'official' format and host them directly off of the Dark Age server.
3. Any content you find on the website, you can translate and use on your website.
4. Images from Brom; you should ask on a case-by-case basis. Not all Brom images are Dark Age licensed.
5. You can use miniature images from the site, making it clear that these are official Dark Age images.
....there are obviously more points, but these are my initial thoughts, based on the effort to translate the last version into German.

Thanks a lot... once again!!
Of course we bought the new rulebook (still waiting for mine in fact as your online shop staff forgot it in our last order hahaha!!)... and foresaw it would be difficult to include stat lines for models except (temporarily) those from the free forcelists of the website.
Still we think it could maybe be possible one day, as www.battle-group.com had been allowed to translated all the warmachine cards, that are copyrighted stuff (but available in each booster which is different from you... of course!) in french on the website.
But you're answer means a great amount of stuff is available to us if we want to make a website worth it's reputation!! 8)
So many thanks and we'll be starting the job very soon...
I have to go back to my brush and paints!
Merci encore!

Hehe oops, just trying to help them feel a bit more comfortable, I know how it is being in an enviroment where nobody speaks your language. Even when you speak their language you know it's not perfect. Anyways, be sure to contact me about the site, Cyclone sounds pretty good, I'll see if I can maybe think of some other stuff too just to give you some ideas.

Hey, write bad english if it helps! As long as we can figure out what you mean and your "Locationb" indicates and non-English country, we're all cool.
For all of you native English speakers out there, I am the Grammar Nazi. Typos are allowed, poor grammar is not.

He's right, I'm bad @ English too and its fun - whenever I drive someone mad I blame the language barrier ;)

We play in Paris, in a shop called Dreamwej located near Place de la Nation... or at home!!
When you come to Paris with your DA minis, drop us a mail, and we'll be able to play some games! ;)

Everyone in our group is veryveryveryvery enthousiastic (wrong typo maybe! :? ) and lots of translating and painting has been started!

Glad to see that you have a site up. :D
Only thing that I can suggest from a design standpoint is to not have that white border around the images, it seems to be distracting to the eye.
