It's not even Christmas yet, and we've got snow here in Sin City. Maybe only for ten minutes today, not enough to even give some ground cover, but a hint of things to come...

I'm dreaming of a White Christmas...

LOL. That sounds so funny...we've had snow for over a month now...just Friday we got over 15cm. I have a love/hate relationship with snow. It looks pretty covering rail fences and conifer trees, but I hate shovelling the stuff.

dunno Scott, they're probably talking about baking soda that some of them are using on their bases : it's supposed to be some white powdery stuff that feels cold when you touch it, but I dunno for sure, twas too long ago...

Argh, I hate snow so very much. Winter around here is so awful. I'm probably going to be moving to Arizona before too long, so no more snow for me. :D

I'd love some snow for Christmas. I grew up in Finland, so snow is an important part of the Christmas feeling for me. Last Christmas it snowed, so that was great! Today we've only had rain.

It's hilarious to see people driving here when there's a tiny bit of snow - traffic slows to a crawl as nobody is used to dealing with the stuff. Ah, the amusement (unless I'm stuck behind them).

having grown up in my younger years in colorado and wyoming i miss the snow and the beauty it brings.. having moved to the east coast, i hate how stupid the drivers here are when i hear the word snow.. the whole of the government shuts down and everyone decides to drive off the road.. or the standard "it;s snowing, so i better go faster, so i get home sooner".. lol ditch drivers kill me.. literally

Lol, exactly how it is here. For you Americans, as you can see by looking over to the left, I'm in the deep south, which equals people who've never seen snow in their lives and an utter lack of snow removal. So, a CM of snow means a screeching halt to the entire area effected. Me being from Connecticut I find it amusing if slightly annoying since "snowed in" means there's snow up to your little toe and means that you look outside and hardly see anything there but it's enough to close down half the state which means you can't do anything or go anywhere.

Don't get me started on snow!!!
Denmark has snow too, but with certain very important exceptions.
Dont get me wrong, I prefer cold over blistering heat, and I really like snow, but there is something terribly wrong with the snow that falls in Denmark.

You see danes don't actually get snow like it is presented in nice christmas cards from around the world.
Since Denmark is comprised of small islands, you are never more than 50 kilometers from the coast(at most), and this affects inland temperatures.
Therefore the temperature constantly sways between just above or just below freezing, unless it gets really cold, then its just -15 degrees celcius with a humidity close to a 100% so it REALLY really f***** stings!

Because of these fluctuations in temperature, and because we rarely get a LOT of snow at once, snow quickly becomes this disgusting and incredibly slippery salty brown sludge that we all slide about on, when were driving,
This thick porridge of corroding goo, will also tear through the metal in your car in a couple of years. And its not like cars are cheap in Denmak. You get a 180% tax on top of the original price when we buy a car, so a new car can easily cost about a years pay. Before our 50% tax! (but thats another story)

The snow that does fall will constantly melt and freeze because of the temperature changes, to there will quickly be this thick shell of incredibly slippery ice covering the entire country. So we can all skid about in slippery brown goo, dressed up to look like the danged Michelin man, carrying christmas presents up to our ears cursing the damned weathergods to Valhalla.

I f****** hate danish snow!

Unless snow is something that you can count on to be there for most of the year. Then it's really neat!
This way, the local authorities ought to be ready to take care of the problems that arise when a sligth bit of frozen water falls from above, as opposed to the danish railways that will grind to a screeching and painful halt as soon as there is even the slightest trace of rime on the tracks.

God bless Canada for permafrost and Icehockey!
I'm moving as soon as I'm done studying.

well danish snow sounds exactly like the snow that falls on the east coast of america.. sorry, it isn't so unique to islands.. it happens anywhere a coastal line and humidity are relatively high.. as well, the water kinda does that..

black ice is what we end up with.. we get lots of slush or goo, as the temperature starts to go from 50(farenheit) to 18(farenheit) and freezes and remelts etc..

unfortunately, no one likes what they have and wishes the grass were greener, until they realize that the grass is just as bitter over there as it was over here, but now you have to rework you sitting spot.. ahh, the typical, mine is worse than yours syndrome.. lol we all think that but it just ain't true.. someone always has it worse than we do..

hate to say it but seems I'm on the lucky side this time :)

I know it happens along all coastlines, hence the referral to the ocean. The thing is, I cant get out of the damned "ice/no ice"- zone without leaving the danged country! :D

Besides Canada has icehockey, AFAIK the NHL stretches as far as Canada.

Demark has... well 8 teams all in all.
Two of them are going bankrupt, and we get all the useless foreign players that aren't excepted into any other countrys league.
I get to watch one hockey game pr. fortnight even though there are two games played almost everyday.
And dont get me started on the music we've got too.

I'm definitely moving. In some seven years or so, when I'm done studying.

Here in SC we've heard of this thing called snow, and some of us have even witnessed the strange event. But, with the Southeast Coast having only two seasons; Hot and Not So Hot, we rarely see water fall from the sky in anything but liquid form. So, to all those gifted enough to have a white, let alone cold, Christmast, and in fact everyone else this season: May God bless you and keep you all. Later

I grew up in FinlandFancy that, so did I ;)

We currently have about 30 cm of snow and the temperature is at some 5 to 10 below (in centigrade degrees). Looks like we'll be getting more snow for Christmas, and luckily the temperature will go up as my house must rely on electric heating while I'm off for the holidays. Moreover, I'm more the "blistering heat" type myself.

I'm also of an opinion that snow must be something icky since my four corgis just love to roll in it. The only other thing they love as much for that specific purpose is rotten carcasses...

Ouch! What are you going to be after all that?

Long story made short.
I am a carpenter something that'll take the first three and a half years worth of education.
Want to study nanotechnology.
The nano study itself is between 5 and 7 years.
the education needed to be accepted to a university where I can study such nerdyness takes two to three years, depending on how much homework youre willing to do.

So I guess it'll translate into starting in high school at the age of 24!

well I'll be done at the age of thirty, able to construct my own house, make heat shields for space shuttles and clone sheep.

Yo PR!

We had about an inch of snow here in ABQ last Tuesday. The majority of it melted away by noon, although there are still patches in my backyard.

I am imagining that we will be in for a very cold winter this year, plenty of snow compared to the last few years. Can't wait to take the kids back to Mt. Charleston for more snow fun :)

You people and your metric system.

And they wouldn't teach you the metric system in American schools? Such a shame, and the citizens wonder why the rest of the world is moving ahead in science and engineering.

Duskland

Mr. Gone: Of course they teach the metric system in our local schools. We simply cease to ever consider it again after that point. For the other part that has more to do with the policies behind the school system.

As far as snow goes we've been fairly lucky here in Virginia so far with just freezing rain and sleet on two or three occasions.

they teach it, some of us use it daily, others don't.. and as for moving ahead.. metric has nothing to do with that..

(so let's quit the damn trolling..)
