View Full Version : Suggestions for a Forsaken Army?

I'm just starting to get into the game and the Forsaken appeal the most.

What are your suggestions for a balanced force to start out with?

My gaming style is probably more stand-offish/defensive/ranged than assault-minded.

(I am a long time Tau player in 40k)

Okay, I know you lot have answered similar questions dozens of time, but somebody help OB out. C'mon...you know you want to.

For a shooty army you definately want to use St. Mark plus a squad of Coils and maybe a Reaver. Definately Coils though. They are a good base unit and you can always switch saints. Plus there are plenty of poses and a nice leader model so they are a good squad to paint.

My favorite Forsken unit out now are the Stikes. They are cool figures but are definately aggressive HTH figures and a 70 a figure they are pricey but worth it.

If you want to start out with a smaller point game I would use a Warwind as the leader as all Saints are over 100 points. For 300 point games they are just too expensive. I would give you a point breakdown but my rulebook is not handy.

For Squads:

Coils, decent shot, the x2 makes for double armor saves (pain)

Banes, two attacks per AP, KP, cheap, high armored, great backup CC unit

Ravages great devistating AOE....different weapon abilities.

Individuals

Field Medic (this is a must) she can save your units

Sister Compassion....this way no one truly dies (til the end)

St. Mark would be your obvious saint for a shooty type army

Cheers.

I've bought a squad of banes and coils along with a weaponsmith.

Looking forward to painting them.

Well, welcome...

Yeah Tau are not one of GW's fav CC armies, but hey the Forsaken like the Tau love a little ranged fighting! You'll need some firestorms and get DeadLock, she a way cool character model available for to the Forsaken...

NO!!! don't get firestorms.
They.... aren't really all that good anyways.
IMO they are way overrated.
Totally. Without a doubt.
Dont buy 'em...ever.

EVER!

I dont know where you get your info, but I play forsaken, and I don't like the firestorms!

I'll leave the rest for you all to figure out.

Wow, strong words....hey they are not a final solution, but I think they do have some merits...AOF weapons do in general and the weaponsmith model can save ya ass...

You need to realize that he is a Brood player... and Regenerating units hate fire...

Got me a weaponsmith for killing all the little gribblies.

DA_Magpie

The weaponsmith is also for keeping units that might malfunction alive, Och. And of course, Firestorms are prone to malfunctioning.

Its true though, your force won't be too strong vs the Brood, but it should hold up alright. By the time your miniatures arrive and get painted my Brood should be about playable, and we can test this theory...

Yeah, the name is a clue Mag. :P

I reckon I'll maybe get some Firestorms and Ravages for the Brood.

In general, stay clear of cauterize, fire weapons, AoE weapons and poison. None of it will do you any good against brood...

DA_Magpie
02-27-2006, 10:54 AM
So poison hurts the Brood eh? That I hadn't considered. Useful to know, from both sides really.

Stunke
02-27-2006, 12:39 PM
Why you blasphemous......
AFAIK, poison has been toned down so damage from poisoned weapons are now permanent, but it doesn't negate the ability to regenerate any wounds from other weapons later on.
Murtros getting hurt and poisoned to yet another wound may be reduced to a single HP, but he will still roll 2 dice when regenerating further wounds. He cannot regenerate beyond the 2 wounds though, because they have been caused by poisoned weapons. If the first wound is a fire/cauterized wound, he ought to be turned into a pincushion shortly after.

Are the Brood susceptible to being overwhelmed by superior numbers?

Stunke

I've had way too much luck with my grists to know!
(hint hint)

I usually just stampede over whatever is left... but my opponent uses strikes and ravages a lot, and they eat up a good portion of his points, so we usually play with somewhat similar sized armies.
And I have spoiled rotten luck with my grist, they are absolutely charmed!

It's usually the strikes I'll have to mince at the end of the game, since they whoop some serious behind, and they tend to chew through a frustrating large portion of my army before i manage to bowl them over.

Well Ochaye Beers sou,nds like you have a good feel for the Forsaken units already... :D , so what was your worst battle with the Tau?

Ochaye Beers
02-28-2006, 08:37 AM
Dark Angels. My brother wins various tournaments with them though.

I should have kept them between 24 and 30 inches away but it didn't work out that way.

Tau are very hard to beat though if you keep your crisis suits on the move and pack loads of pulse rifles.

well, the new iteration of the tau will change all that.. they got a face lift from hell and there won't be many that will soon forget it.. let's just say those freakin' fly boys they got are nothing more than hopping space marine killers..

Am I the only one who thinks ST. John makes a pretty good shooty force - maybe even better that Mark? Haniels and Bangers are great, if somewhat shorter ranged shooters. You still have access to all the Weaponsmiths, Coils and Firestorms you want, and even St John can join in the long range fun with his Death Disk.

DrRazr

I was kinda wondering about why the bangers weren't with Mark. Is the fluff about Dedlock being trained as a banger gone now? I thought Mark was supposted to be the shooty man, guess John has a few tricks.

Yeah, the fluff about her being an ex-Banger is gone.

Here is the first Bane I've painted.

Any suggestions for refining the colour scheme? I'm trying to keep the scheme saint-neutral for now, as I haven't decided which saint I like best.

Apologies for the lack of light in the photo.

Paul, your uni email won't accept ingoing, I already tried to send this to you.

Two things in regard to the scheme. First, you need some more highlights. It's just too dark now. Second, I'd avoid overusing washes on skin tones. Not sure what ethnicity you were aiming for, but right now it looks too dirty. I'd water the wash down if you're going to use it, and then give it a highlight after that.

ochaye what is the standard technique you currently use?

for example, do you ink or wash over a white primer, do you paint, then wash with a dark color and then highlight from there.. ?

from what i can tell you just need to do some transitions to lighten the overall model coloring.. pretty good for a basecoat to work up from.

Ochaye Beers
03-08-2006, 04:13 PM
Black primer, base coat, wash and then highlights.

The darkness of the model is a deliberate thing though, I wanted to go for a dark and dirty look as opposed to the gleaming Tau I've been painting up until now. Maybe I've overdone it a touch. The photo is really dark as well, that might be partly it.

I was going to add bone coloured highlights to the light cloak but I didn't like how it was turning out.

Second, I'd avoid overusing washes on skin tones.
I wanted a weathered, dirty look on the skin so I used a darker wash than I would normally. I've brightened it up a bit now after your suggestion.

I've painted the second one as well now, and it seems likely I can get one model painted per day. I'm just trying to get them done reasonably quickly, to an acceptable gaming standard.

DrRazr

As a reasonably new painter, I'd say my definition of "acceptable gaming standard" is anything more than primer :P

My brother is a bit more advanced than me at painting.

I'm still learning the finer points.

gunslinger

i know i learn better by watching and then asking questions.. but i hear you ochaye.. if the dark look is what you want you have done a fine job.. you still want to "force the highlights" a bit.. as small minis tend to need a bit of help on the finer highlights..

you can look there to see how i paint some of my stuff.. i don't have nay pics of my DA stuff yet.. my friend took some but he swears they are not saved on teh camera.. i will have to invite him back..

Lookin' good. I think you have a good skin tone on the inquisitor.

I have brightened up the skin tones on my banes (I have 3 done now), thanks to the advice from this thread, and I think it is an improvement.

Seen those banes of Och's now and they look a LOT better in the flesh. That picture does not do it justice.

Of course, no matter what they look like they'll all die the same.
