View Full Version : Dark age terrain?

I've been busy cleaning and painting some old armorcast resin I picked up at cold wars (sorry no pictures as of yet). I was just wondering what others were using for terrain?

I bought some collapsed corrosive tanks, some dumpsters, a couple of soda machines, a selection of crates and a set of sandbag walls.

I also picked up a few terrain bases that I figured I could modify into little flavor terrain pieces. Now I just need some plastic girders and some window screen and those will be done 8).

Terrain: steep desert cliffs, razorwire, tripod tanktraps, makeshift fires and sandbags, played on a dark brown table.
I've got three feet of razorwire ready for one of those WW1 style scenarios.

I found a big chunk of rusty metal today. I'm not entirely sure how it could become terrain just yet, but it looks good so that's enough for me.

Random found stuff makes the best terrain. There's a beach I know which has black rocks which are great for Dark Age, and roots of heather make strange twisted trees (with no leaves

I use IMEX (http://thewarstore.com/IMEXPlatformerHexagon.html) stuff; Tamiya (http://tamiya.com/english/products/mmv/index.htm#catalog) 1/48 military miniature terrain (nice walls and barrels and etc) as well as Tamiya (http://tamiya.com/english/products/list/35mm/kit35001.htm) 1/35 pieces (nice tents for the Dragyri, for example); LaQ (http://www.yoshiritsu.com/) building blocks because they are futuristic (the black and white ones--and I do some weathering effects); and finally I build my own stuff with pieces of pens, strange caps off of things, busted electronics, and Plastruct (http://www.plastruct.com/) products.

Recently I've been really interested in carving up my own pieces and casting them in plaster, ala Hirst Arts (http://www.hirstarts.com/index.html). I bought a pirate ship from Paper Models International (http://www.papermodels.net/) and after rescaling it using my scanner/printer, made templates that need to be cut from plasticard and Corri-flute sheet, both of which are found in abundance here in Japan (Hazzah!)--and, er, no, the ship isn't for DA, just for fun!

Time is a constant killer though... (;_ ;)

That IMEX stuff looks great, I've seen it around at a few stores. The name of this one is just too funny though http://www.thewarstore.com/product7434.html

When I play with my friends, I'm probably just going to use a bunch of Mordheim stuff from back in the day. I'd like to make some special stuff, but right now being a college student takes precedence.

Nice and dark!

I found some rust-red, saltridden slate tiles at the local DIY store, with a really uneven surface (for a floortile) that makes them look just like a martian salt desert. They were extremely cool, but at 100$ pr square meter, and NO guranteee that half the tiles wouldn't be red, but rather black or green, I had to let it go.

I'm still aching over it. GOD they were cool!

I think our first Dark Age terrain has been shown elsewhere on the forum, but here it is again. We used Hirst Moulds to make all the pieces, and it is supposed to be some kind of underground science facility from before the Dragyri caste upheavals:

Dark Age Terrain (http://bayonetpics.tripod.com/id4.html)

Its been fully painted now, with the cobblestone sections replaced by sci-fi flooring, with a few additional bits as can be seen in the GAMECON reports in the Battle Report section here.

Seems a bit slow loading up at the mo, plus there are some annoying pop-ups now, so better switch on the pop-up blockers if you have them :D

Need to get some form of 'outside' board done now........

Wow, you guys make me envious. I'll have to make some stuff now. I'm not sure I want to do anything permanent though, I like to be able to move terrain around.

Ah spring, when a young wargamer's thoughts turn to terrain. Seriously, this is becoming topic of the mouth. I keep finding myself picking things up and thinking

Those are some great looking tables there Racel. Looks like the Dragyri have run into some offworlders though. No doubt it'll be another honourable victory.

Care to tell us how you did any of it? That tree, the building or those rock towers for instance.
*Obvious hint*

I have done LOTS of these write-ups in the past, but seems they were lost to the forum updates. I will have to try and find some time to redo some of them.

Thanks but if your busy don't worry about it. I've got 12 days until my dissertation is due so I'm more than appreciative of anyone else who's got more pressing work.

Cheers, but the respect and acknowledgement for this terrain set has to go to Art-de-Vivre mainly. He did most of the work. He's the real Hirst-Plastermaster round here!!!

I agree. You guys have wonderful terrain. Maybe you can get Art-de-Vivre tio submit some write-ups to the forum. We all can learn some new tricks (like metal epoxy!!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D )

I still have to get my Hirst molds back from Rizzen . . . . maybe he built something with them by now . . . naw, more likely playing WOW!

Well, he did a short tutorial article for our group's website a while back. Not DA related, but gives the basics:

Hopefully he'll be reading this thread later and will oblige :D

Nice clean tutorial. Its clear and to the point without allthe rambling that I am prone to. Hirst blocks are great, especially if you use dental plaster to make the parts. Seems like I have at least 70 pounds of dental plaster in my supply room. Might even use it again some day . . . . I hope we see more of these in the future!!!

Yeah, he wrote a nice article. was easy for me to upload to the website as well.

I hope we see more of these in the future!!!

Jeff

I'll try and get Art-de-Vivre to do a DA related article. In the meantime, I shall try and finish my 2 WIP projects for DA.............

1. Codename "Puck"
2. Shhhhhhhhhhhh............ secret :P

I like the warmachine jacks in that picture there.
hardly any comparison shots of Drakage miniatures are out there, so it's nice to know that even though PP advertises that they'll deplete the word aupply of pewter, you guys still make them bigger, without advertising it.

I'm an not prone to such humility of course, and would LOVE if anyone would take a few pictures of some dragyri lined up next to some jacks. I'd love to parade them around danish TTG forums.

Unless you come right to peoples front door, no one is even willing to spend the time to meet new players or try out a new game, just for fun.
The copenhagen gaming community is hellbent on 40k. A few likes WM as well, but it sure aint a lot!
