Hi folks!
And here's allready my next w.i.p.:
It is Grist from the Brood fraction.

I have only painted a bit on the skin so far.
Don't mind the colorfull skirt. That was just a demonstration and will be painted over later.
Well, still a lot to do on him.

Question; do you use the 'underpainting' technique or is that the color that Grist's skin is going to be.
...glad you clarified that bit about his kilt.

It's a hippy Grist! Looking good so far, though there isn't much there.

Good morning!
@Steeldragon: Thank you. Yeah, I think my "natural" way to paint, works quite well with organic/living stuff like that.
@ DA_Pr0fane: Problem is, the way I sometimes photograph my miniatures is a bit unfair, cause the closeups reveals every uncleanliness the human eye normally woudn't see. That's why the skin looks quite rough.
But back to your question. Basicly this is, what the Grist's skin will look like. But I will sure rework it a bit more, before it is finished. Clean up and smoothen things a bit.
@ Vaxillus: On the next images I have "unhippied" him a bit with white.
I have painted the tubes on his arms last night.
The brownish color on his head was just a test with some ink. I am still deciding whether to use metalics or normal paint as basecolor for the armour parts. But I tend more to metalics, like on Murtros.
He also now has eyes.
Anyway, here are some more images:

as i am noticeing with those brilliant closeups that the primers and paints seem very grainy.. how do you smooth that out? i have had that problem a few times and was wondering what to do so it didn't look like a doodle bug was running wild in my models
Brushguy
07-12-2006, 02:54 PM
Well, actually it's not the primer or the paint, it was just a pretty unpleasing casting. But it also looks a bit worse, due to the macro photo.
It is better in real.

That's strange, none of my minis seem to have that problem. I'm sure it's unnoticeable on the tabletop though.

That's strange, none of my minis seem to have that problem. I'm sure it's unnoticeable on the tabletop though.
Not really, it's not strange, I mean. Just like every process that's been automated, there are good days and bad days. It may be that the caster had a high humidity day and this impacted some of the casts. Or any of a number of things that could have left a less than perfect surface. However, we do QA every miniature that gets packaged and if it's in your hands, we felt it passed the muster.
I will take this opportunity to point out that, should you ever feel that you've received a sub-standard miniature, don't hesitate to contact us with your observation and we'll make it good. I don't mean that we'll send Victoria Silvstedt (http://i.stratosfera.cz/strato/obrazky/esquire/99030s.jpeg) around to soothe your angst, but we will likely replace the mini.
Brushguy
07-13-2006, 11:24 AM
@Pr0fane:
Well, I am sure that you do everyting to ensure the best QA possible.
The casting in it self was ok. No missing parts or smoothness in the details. Just a but of a rough surface. And as you can see on the next images, that is nothing that really bothers me.
So on with the paintjob:
The metalparts where basecoated with Vallejo Model Air Metallic Copper 068. Then a light wash with Vallejo Game Color Bronce 57. And then I washed with a pale dark orangebrown (no metallic paint this time, mixed from orange and brown paints)

Next I did some washings with some dark brown, Vallejo Model Inks "SkinWash", "Sepia" and"Green":

so Dirk, do you just used washes?
Brushguy
07-13-2006, 06:42 PM
Yes, Gunslinger, just simple washes. Very thin and subtle, but washes.
That is the whole trick. :D
gunslinger
07-13-2006, 06:54 PM
the problem i have is that washes are stains basically very weak ones, but staines none the less.. how do you control the application of said stain without just poking your brush on the mini all day long? erratic patterns would seem to be so much pin pricks on the model.. or am i just missing the boat on this one?
I was going to say something topical but got distracted by Victoria
gunslinger
07-13-2006, 07:11 PM
i guess maybe i am doing it backwards, i use washes to darken my models, it seems you use them to lighten, in which case they aren't a stain but just alighter color.. although with a wash i don't see how that would change the color expect the wrong way..
dammit i wish i could see you do a model, i don't learn jack spit from tutorials, i need to see it..
Very impressive website Brushguy! Love the 90mm Blazon and the Assanis Miniature furry little Chaos gal! The cenobites were nice as well. Other than Pinhead, I had forgotten the others as Helraiser III was so bad I had deleted the entire movie from my sort term memory. Sadly it is now coming back. I think III stunk more than the one on the space station. Pew.
DA_Demorney
07-13-2006, 07:45 PM
watch "Inferno" and "Hellseeker"
I was disappointed by 3 and 4 too, but those two flics (5 and 6) were quite good
Yet another reason to get netflicks. Did you ever read the Hellraiser comic book anthology? It was good stuff until they tried to create a recurring storyline, then it blew.
gunslinger
07-13-2006, 08:08 PM
umm, the whole movie premise is a recurring story line.. so what's the difference? i mean you have hellraiser and a box and a person and pinhead and wash rinse repeat..
i liked all the movies. some more than others..
Brushguy
07-13-2006, 08:13 PM
@Kyle: Thank you. I don't remember much from Hellraiser 3. :D
@Gunslinger:
Basicly I first basecoat with a very ligth paint.
In case of this armour a light metallic copper, almost silver in appearence. When dried, I use a very thinned down darker copper metallic and wash it over this light basecolor in a very thin layer. After this wash has dried, I wash over it again with an even darker wash. Only this time I aim into the shadow areas with the wash. And so on. Until all the deeper areas are darkend down in shadows. And the raised areas are still light.
Get the point? :)

Thank you.
I allready painted on. Gave the "evening dress" (for that's what it looks a bit like), a first pale green basecoat.
I also tried some effect on the backpack, trying to make some areas look like glass cylinders filled with some green ooze. Well, it's not finished yet and I am stuck a bit. Still have to figure out, how to make the effect work completely.
Aynway, here are more images:

Well the "ooze" is looking great so far!
Not sure on the "evening dress". The pale green isn't working for me, but you did say it's WIP....maybe highlight up to a deep yellow??
Okay, my favorite detail so far; the ooze drip trail on the rear armor plate! That rocks.

07-14-2006, 01:35 PM
i think so Dirk. you paint in reverse.. with the lighter colors first and then stain them as you work towards the shadow areas.. is that correct?
feel free to pm me and maybe we can discuss this in more depth. it is a style i have heard about, but have never experienced and i wonder what it would be like if i mixed it in with my style..

Thank you, Pr0fane.
You are right, as the "dress" is WIP now, it will receive a couple of darker green washes and become much darker.
He had this little tube looking out at the bottom of his backpack, so that I just had to paint an ooze trail on the armour plate. Maybe I'll enhance this a bit more. Just the green ink is a bit too translucent and weak.

Yeah, you are right.
We can discuss this here, so the others can benefit from it, too. No need for PMs.
As you can see, I have basecoated the "dress" with a very light and pale green. Next I will apply a couple of darker green washes to shade down the fabric and "build up" the shadows. It is a bit like layering a coloured filter over the light green. This way I have good control over the shading effect.
About the stains building up.
I use a few drops of dish detergent in the paint water to break up surface tension of the water. This way, the pigments of the paint can better float around in the wash and won't build up stain so fast when the water dries.
Also I only wash small areas at one time, so I can control the paint, while it dries and clean up any building stain with a damp brush.
Of course this also depends on the used brand of paint. Some paints dry so fast, that you don't get the chance to clean the wash up, before it is too dry. That's is a problem, I have with Vallejo Paints, for example. but my old Ral Partha Paints have a great drying time and allow me to clean up any wash stain, that may build up. I use a couple of different brands of paint from my local hobby store. And they all work fine.
Any more questions?
Cheers

07-14-2006, 06:30 PM
what is a wash to you? 20:1?
Brushguy
07-14-2006, 06:41 PM
Hmm, good question. I have no real receipt.
I just dip the brush into the water, then I dip the tip into the paint, then a little more water. Then I touch the brush onto a paper tissue to see, how good the thinned paint flows from the bristles.
This mix on the brush is my wash. Milky consistence will describe it good enough, I would say.
Did I explain it understandable?
gunslinger
07-14-2006, 06:51 PM
Thank you Dirk, that explanation was very informative. so rather than start dark and work upwards, you start light and word downwards.. exactly the opposite of what i do.. i might have to try that..
would you mind doing a step by step the next time you paint something to show me and the others your technique? i would appreciate it very much..

:D
@Stunke: Well, I am not a player, so I am also not a brood player. I just like the miniatures. And the brood seem to suit my style of painting quite well, I'd say.
But it's nice of you to quote one of my alltime favorite motion pictures.
Anyway, to respond to your request, Gunslinger, here are some images of the fabric painting progress, step-by-step.

The finished look reminds me a lot of oil paintings.
Most mini painters try and get an extremely smooth and silky look to their stuff, but yours look sort of gritty, though in a very controlled manner, and they get a very picturesque appearance, instead of looking like a painted toy.
Thumbs up, thats very impressive!

I am always amazed when people post their WIP painting projects:
Am I the only person in the whole world that gets sloppy splatters?
All my highborn (in process) have blue noses, purple slashes across thier cheeks, and a dust-like gray covering their arms and legs.
My WIP models often look like they were painted by a nervous caffine addict with restless leg syndrome who just came in from running a chainsaw for a hour and a half. . . Oh, yeah: they are.

Thanks. Yes, the muzzle was supposed to glow a bit. I thought (having actually no idea, what Grist's weapon really is made of), if he carries around some sinnister cannister (nice word, eh?) of green goo, his weapon has to reflect that with a little bit of a green, venomous glow.
