Well i thought it would be cool after seeing the interest and sucess of Terrain Blogs on other Forums to start one here.

Here is the Plan

I am going to build a 4' x 6' Abandoned Bio Genetcs Lab on a Swamp Board. I will include a Step by Step details of the process including a picture diary of the process and end result. It will be used at the Rumble in the Wastelands Tourney at Jac games on Sept 10th. So not alot of time for such an Ambitious project. I will include pricing as realavent.

Here goes.

Byron

First Pics will be posted Saturday Evening.

Sounds good, Blackhand. I'm going to have to bust out my terrain-fu at some point as well.

Next time I volunteer to run a Warmachine tourney, I'm doing it at a store that will supply all the terrain themselves

What you meant to say was "Next time I volunteer to run a Dark Age tourney, I'm doing it at a store that will supply all the terrain themselves". Isn't that right . . . . ?

@Blackhand - Can't wait to see what you have in store for us. As Grafter suggested, terrain is my thing and I have been waiting to see some new stuff around here.

Well, no, that would imply I was running a Dark Age tourney to begin with :P

Anyways, enough with the not-really-related-to-the-topic banter and back to waiting for sweet, sweet updates from Blackhand.

Ok after 2 long work days  and another trip to Home Depot, Wal Mart, and the craft store we have the begining.

Step 1:

Lay out already Built table :D

Gather Large items to get general Feel for Table orientation and Size.

First Pic is An overview of entire table. The entire table is going to have 1/2" pink foam as a base under this stuff.

Hilly Areas will be Swampland with vegitation. The grates will lead up to the main facility.

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b14/Blackhand_Paintworks/0301011200006.jpg

Second part will be connected to the main facility via a walk way which will be tall enough for Dragyri models to pass underneath. They will be the Bio Pools where the brood are spawned and the nasties are created.

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b14/Blackhand_Paintworks/0301011200007.jpg

The Third area will be the Power plant where energy is created to run the facility.

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b14/Blackhand_Paintworks/0301011200008.jpg

The Last pic is of the main facility, Both the Octogon small building and the large round domed Building will have removable roofs and a detailed interior. You will actually be able to enter the facility through the octagon building and then enter the Round domed Building.

The Figure in this Pic is a Dragryi Frostbite For scale Purposes.

Now that's how you use a globe! Looking very nice. For the record, DA seems to play better on scenery heavy boards, so don't be afraid to add some crazy swamp vegetation.

I have one suggestion for your grating leading up to the main facility. Since the holes are pretty larg for the 30mm scale I suggest either putting some sort of plexi-glass or thick clear plastic over key sections or doing the same with some wire mesh. That way the underlying structure still shows through while it is able to hold minis and doesn't look slightly odd. :)

Very nice... since your using foam board you could have a much larger swamp area with just a few raised land areas. Large swamps rule!

My primary thought on looking at the setup of the board (beyond "cooool") is worries about playability.

The building contains lots of (currently) dead-space on the board. There is that single walk-way up and from there the scafolding to the outbuilding.

Generally, it is probably always best to have two routes onto any terrain piece. Especially something this large.

I would consider a second ramp to the main building.
And / or
"ladder-rungs" on some of the other buildings (like the towers, and the outbuilding). Just to encourage use of that third dimension.

WOW, the table is looking very good. Like how you made use of so many household items for the buildings and bits. Part of the art of terrain building, and the fun, is finding cheap and unique ways of constructing stuff. You have done an exceptional job of finding uses for obscure stuff. Also like the idea for the heatgun and the foam. I will have to play with my heatgun and see what results I can get.

Can't wait to see this all finished!
