View Full Version : Forsaken low-cost troops
i bought my first two minis but yet still to get them ;)
i have X'Cess and Warwind. i want to play St. Mary force.
now i want to order a Field Medic and... something more. and here's the question.
which low-cost troop to buy ---> Banes, Firestorms or Coils. they have moreless the same cost but i think each unit have different usage. could you, please, give me some hints what tactics suit better each models.

Banes- Close Combat oriented- but very good for the points IMHO- they have a hard time hitting (low AS) but high armor and attack twice per AP- so for the cost they rank as one of the best CA units in the game.
Firestorm- If you can sneak them up in range they are nasty! Take out swathes of enemy and the ones that don't die can be on fire. But they can blow sky high themselves just by being hit and take out friends nearby as well- so highly effective but dangerous.
Coils- Shoots one of the best ranged weapons for a troop IMHO. 40cm with a frisbee sawblade- holy cow! Does great damage if it hits as well.
All three are excellent choices. All three are completely different.
Whatever fits your style!

Kind of open ended:
A lot of folks swear by Banes. And, in CA they are really tough customers for their cost. No denying.
However, myself, I think the Forsaken strength is in Ranged. And, I want to play to that. Thus, I always end up leading toward Coils. Kind of the Jack of Both trades.
Now, the real question is: what point range are you looking at?
350 gives you a problem: X-Cess, Warwind, Field Medic, 3 Coils = 351. I absolutely hate fudging limits, even by a point. In which case, maybe you should change your focus to Banes just to fit 350 better.
if you are looking at 500, I would go for both Coils and Firestorm. Firestorm are SUPERB, when they work. Their squishness, and 'splodiness, make them a gamble I wouldn't use at 350.
Adding two Coils + a Leader and two Firestorm + a leader get you a rounded by heavy shooting 487 points.
Or, 4 coils and 2 Firestorm is 480, is divisable by blisters
Either leaves you wiggle room to change the medic for a Compassion, or another beatstick like a Contradiction, should the need arrise.

Ok, got some suggestions here already but here's my thoughts.
My first piece of advice would be to mix and match a little. So instead of taking 1 full squad of banes take 1

If given the choice Id go for banes first then coils
namely becasue I like the bane models better and also because theyre a little tougher which is always good in a small points game
though the coils versatility is a big upside as well

One thing to remember is that Dark Age is unique in the fact that our supposedly "range" troops are also surprisingly good at close combat too. They are not elves :) so just because they can shoot a death disc, don't mean that they cannot kick your ass once they close. Coil are awesome in my book. Soften your target with one or two vollies and then mob up with close combat.
With that said you can do the same with Banes... add a grenadier, lob a grenade and charge in with the hard hitting double mace...
So it depends on your play style...
A mix of coils and banes has proven to be very successful for the Forsaken. Also it gives you a chance to figure out which group you prefer.

Hell I'm terrified of Coil and Firestorm, so go with those ;)

To be honest I'm much more frightened of Banes than Coils. Not that I haven't seen coils do some really nasty damage but Banes can just lay waste at times.

That's because you are a one trick pony, MRIONLYPLAYBROODSOIGETPWNTBYFIRESTORMS :)

Hit 'em with grists. Hit 'em with puds. Run them down with a gazelle and kick them into one another. Hopefully watch them all blow up. Come on this isn't going to be impossible.

Hahahaha
Yeah whatever Grafter as long as it makes you sleep at night ;)
I'll get all you creatorgods in the end, and by the mere it'll be painful!
On another note: Anyone who has no respect of autohitting+cauterizing PW 7 hits and range 40 on those blasted 6*2 discs is a fool!
Or wearing very heavy, tear-proof flameretardant kevlar.
Now Grist on the other hand...
thanks guys a lot for the feedback ! :)
i think i would buy the Banes + Grenadier. the idea that Grafter posted is fine to me. the next thing is to choose between Firestorms and Coils. and this time i would take the models which look i like more. i'd go with the ladies spreading fire. the models are far better imo. buying two boxes and a Grenadier give me nice addition and some room to diversify lists.
i won't start another thread and ask here. and what about the Condradiction and Clergy Ann ? they also have moreless the same cost.

Clergy Ann are 2 models minimum, where Contradiction is an individual(Spelling? its late). A squad vs. one model. The Clergy Ann have a better range, but Contradiction's shotgun hits harder. Same goes for the CA factor. Clergy Ann end up getting more hits though, in the long run.
Hope any of this made sense, its near 4am in Ohio. Time for bed.

I've never tried Clergy Ann (will once I'm done painting them) but I know the Contradiction is fantastic, both at short range and in CA.

I love Ann's for two reasons:
1) The Models (of course)
2) No Panic!
Well worth the 1 1/2 cost over Coils (Who I think they otherwise compare closely too, in battle field roles). They tend to be smaller units than the more common Forsaken grunts. But the no panic keeps them there and fighting to the bitter end.
So, if you are going with Banes over Coils for the time being, these girls are worth a look.

oh, right. i didn't notice that...
Contradiction's shotgun is tempting though
ok i went through your tips and the overall stats of the models/units.
i come back from a list that i've made... but there is a problem i exceeded 500APs
X'Cess
Warwind
Field MEdic
Banes (2) + Leader + Grenadier
Firestorm (2) + Leader
Total cost --- 524
do the units need a Leaders ? i suppose yes... then i should drop something else and add a cheaper model. what are your thoughts ?

No, units don't need leaders. A squad can function without one without any penalties.

with forsaken i use a unit of bane w/ grenadier and a unit of coil.. i at a unique (take your pick, there are so many.. ) and then a leader (usually a banger or other choice.. ) and even a flense unit every now and again.. you have some ranged to soften them up and some serious punch when you get there..
of course all things considered, no plan goes the way you intend it to, so just have some fun with it..
zim in your case take one or the other
X'Cess or Warwind (use the points saved to get more banes and firestorm.. or other models..
Field MEdic
Banes (2) + Leader + Grenadier
Firestorm (2) + Leader
in 500 points you don't want 1/2 to 2/3 of you army tied up in 3 models.. that will get you done real quick..
ok, i'm almost ready to make my order.
what are the advantages for a unit to have a Leader, except for the obvious fact that Leader has slightly better stats ?

As far as I remember that's pretty much it. I'm quite a long way from my rule book right now though and I haven't played much forsaken.
ok, thanks :)
now here's the list i would like to start my DA journey with
X'Cess
Field Medic
Clergy Ann x2
Banes x2
+ Leader
+ Grenadier
Total points: 478
what do you think about it ?

Nice choice... You got something for everything... very well balanced, good job... The grenadier is a nice touch, great for softening your opponent as you advance.

I thought a good low cost troop for forsaken would be the street rats that roam the towns looking for tech booty. these would constitute juveniles with chains and baseball bats, the homeless orphans etc that have ganged up for protection
Leaders provide a Sphere of Influence (SoI) troops can be within 10cm of the leader and not be considered Out of Coherency (OoC)
