What in your opinion is the best figure in the DA line? What makes it your favorite? Which one do you find most disappointing?
Wayne Rogers
09-11-2006, 07:03 PM
Favorite mini would be a VERY hard pick! But I think at the top of my list might be the secial edition Saint John. Its just a fantastic pose.
My least favorite is an easy choice. Warwind #1. Sculptor tried to follow the artwork but failed to pull it off in almost every respect. (Warwind #2 more than made up for the sub-par predecessor)

Favorite is probably Nathaniel. I love that guy. That said ST Mark and the crouching Bola come close as does MJB and...
Worst, well I'll go with Wayne although I never liked the Reaver either.

Last time there was a thread like this I was called a coward for not posting so here we go.
I agree with Wayne on Warwind 1. If the sculptor had just concentrated on making him look life-like and cool (and even based off the art if he wanted) rather than slavishly copying the art it would have been really, really good. I

And least favorite is the Skarrd Pox.

Favorite is Nathanial for his dynamic pose and awsome detail.
Least favorite is Helexa for her sloppy anatomy. Close behind her are the firestorm (#1) for a simular reason. I think that while DA has some of the best sculpts in the industry right now, Helexa is one of the worst.

Too many choices on the favorites
though factions wise
Forsaken-Contradiction (which ironically Ive yet to get)
Skarrd-Hoodoo
Dragyri- Death's Device
Brood- Murtros
Least favorite is probably the original firestorms (the new ones are great though) though the ravage leader rubs me wrong for some reason as does helexa

I'm guessing the Pox is for the Rot Cult, figured they'd be released last. Hope they'll be resculpted if they're as bad as you seem to imply. Didn't think the Brood Mere would get a mini.
Anyways, concept wise Raze is definately a favorite, though I'm not sure he translated into mini form as flawlessly as he could have (though he's still excellent.)
I'm too indecisive to choose a favorite, so I'll make a list: Nathaniel & Orchid, St. Mark, Field Medic (like it better than the original art actually), Golab #2. Not an exact list since I don't own most of it. It'll probably change once I see Curwen and the Charity's Zeal.
As for least favorite, I'll make a list too. Warwind #1, the Warhead (it's smaller than the Golabs for heaven's sake! Where's the beef?!?!), and the Bone Doc #1 since he's too big.
I wrote too much again...

The Best: [/color]
Skarrd: Harpies, Sister of Charity, Toxic Mistress
Brood:MJB, Pud Throwers, Gazelle & Sawblade 2
Forsaken:WarWind 2, Dedlock, Nathaniel and Orchid.
Dragyri: Death's Device, Luck'Taii
The Worst:
Skarrd: Golab 1
Brood: Ratchets (field hockey pose does nothing for me)
Forsaken:Warwind 1 (a carbon copy of the painting missing the intensity and confidence that defines a WarWind.)
Dragyri: Soul Searcher (Not nearly as cool as the Death's Device)
I'm also with magpie (never thought I'd say that) I love Helexa but the paint job she's often dispalyed with just does not do her justice.
Cheers,
Osiris

Howler.
Oddly enough, some of my fave minies are actually brood!
The pud thrower and sawblade standing upright and MJB are... phenomenal scuplts.
But two favorites would be MJB and the bolas!
They break at the base, but the motion and fluidity that's to them is just unmatched in anything I've seen.
Dislike: Warwind. That cape is just... well.... ugly. The other warwind however is rocking awesome.

The studio paint job on Helexa really gives a bad impression of a fairly good mini.
Best:
Forsaken: Xcess (I'm in love!), Warwind 2, female Haniel, Dedlock
Dragyri: Deaths Device (I'm in love, again!), Whisper 2, Yovanka
Brood: MJB (that's one fine ass) and Gazelle
Skaard: Toxic Mistresses, Grafter, Buzz Blade 2, ex Charity's Might Buzzblades.
Worst:
Chitin (I've moaned about before :P ), Bone Doc 1 (the other one is sooooo much better!), Warwind 1 (same reasons as everyone else), Whisper 1 (just her face needs work, everything else is alright), Harpies (the wings and hands are great, but everything else should look more "I'm a deranged psychopath about to swoop down and eat you now" and less "I'm off to a goth party", they're too neat and the platform boots are rediculus. If they were suposed to be goth faeries they'd be fantastic sculpts, but they just don't work as Skaard for me at the moment, we'll see how I feel once I've painted some though).

Fav is really tough: LE Sister of Compassion, Sabre, Whisper 2, Yovanka, Toxic Mistress (all), in no particular order (And could add 10 more without really thinking about it).

Where's the love for St. Mary? I don't even have the fig, but I'm guessing that is a Werner Klocke sculpt. He has to be the best sculpter in the business. It was a good choice getting him on board for this game.
St. John is pretty good too, but I prefer commanders with faces.

Best and worst, you can blame most of it on me :)
For what is worth, most of the ones that people don't like were done by sculptors who no longer work for us. Helexa was a problem from the start... you should have seen what we went through, you would have laugh your ass off... But we do take our sculpts very seriously and moreover, we take your comments even more seriously. We don't have thin skin and we appreciate the crits, and will do our best to make our products better...

A couple asked why X-Cess is my least fav:
(No offense to anyone who likes the model, mind)
1) I'm waiting for Austin to come out and yell, "She's a man, baby!"
"Her" anatomy is very [lets say] 'boyish'. The phrase "Great Samarian Flatlands" come to mind as well. (I am making topless Forsaken, afterall)
2) I really dislike effect her haircut has on her head, from the rear.
3) Her body is very square (almost a complete box look when you look at her shoulders, in how the body transitions from side to front/back).

I've always said that the Deaths Device was my fave DA Sculpt, but I'm afraid that the DD has now been relegated to the #2 spot.

Have to say X'Cess is one of my favorites so far for the Forsaken. She sort of has that Aeon Flux look to her.
I like the original St. Mark better than the SE version. I think the pose is so much better, and I'm not as crazy about the SE head.
For the Dragyri, I love the Death's Device as well as all the female models.
My least favorite is the Reaver, ugh that is a nasty model. Are there any other Reaver sculpts out yet???

I'd have to say that although I really love Werner Klocke's sculpts, bringing Kev White along really cinched it for me. I saw X'Cess and the Junkers in the display booth at Gen Con and when I finally decided to plunge into Dark Age, those minis were the first I bought.
Hopefully he, or Werner, is busy working on some new Reavers!!!!!!

Abomination- Looks clunky to me-not enough detail for such a large model-just doesn't look like it would actually work.
Raze- Looks-well just doesn't fit with the rest of the line-don't like how big and out of place he looks.
Best-- Don't know-I like the rest of the models, even most of the ones you named I like exponentially better.

Most disappointing for now is the Ratchet - everything else about the Brood is superb (but the feel for the Ratchet doesn't really seem to gel with the rest of the army.) Also from a race that has saw blades growing out of their bodies and chigg staves the whole idea of pointy bone field hockey sticks seems a little underwhelming.
Among the Best - MJB easily, Warwind 2, Pud Throwers, Toxic Mistresses, Harpies, Death's Device, Banger and an especially the Limited Edition St John and St Mark.
cheers,
