Well having started the whole thread about the quickstart lists I thought I'd better get on and use them once they were so swiftly delivered. So last night I tried out 2 new skirmish games, one of which was DA, and much fun was had by all (apart from the dead guys).
We were running a little late by the time we started as we'd been delayed starting our first game, but we piled in after I gave my opponent a quick briefing on the main points of the rules. From looking at the models his favourite faction is the Forsaken, so he took them. My favourite model range as a whole is the Dagyri, though I was perfectly happy to take the Brood instead as they're cool too. The armies we used were:
Forsaken
Warwind (95)
Coil x 2 (90)
Bane x3 (120)
Brood
Gazelle (90)
Ratchet x2 (90)
Broodling x3 (60)
Broodling x3 (60)
Not a huge game, but enough to get started. Anyway, we set up and started moving, my Brood rushing forwards while he took the odd pot-shot to no real effect.
As the Brood closed they started taking hits, losing one Broodling, though luckily not enough to take a panic test. The I got into contact, and the boot was on the other foot.
A combination of winning initiatives and outnumberings meant I swamped the Banes, the Ratchets and a squad of Broodlings romping all over them. One Broodling took out one and then had a chomp on a second. All 3 died quickly. Much nastier than I'd thought once they actually arrived.
The Warwind was in raech of the victorious ratchets and Broodlings and the Gazelle and the remaining Broodlings were about to charge the Coils when we had to stop. It looked very much like there would be few survivors of the Forsaken force, especially now with only 2 activations to my 4 they wouldn't be able to dodge all of my troops.
It was very entertaining and taught us enough to know that we both liked Dark Age and could see a lot of play in it. We've ordered a copy of Genesis each, and once we've read some proper army lists we'll get some figures.
No real rules questions came up though I'd like to just check one thing I think I was doing right, but...
If I'm activating a unit in CA I spend 1 AP to thump my opponent (in base contact). Let's say I'm a Ratchet. Does that 1 AP buy 2 attacks (because there are 2 weapons listed in the same AG 1 on the card): one with the chitin club and one with the chitin short sword? I think it does, but confirmation would be peachy :D
Then, if they don't fall over dead I can spend another AP and hit them twice more :D
A final comment: It's a pity that the 'on Hold' bit isn't in the Quickstart rules as that makes the game much more interesting (and better). The lack of it leaves you with the kind of one-sided dullness that Confrontation has morphed into (IMO). If I hadn't known of it from elsewhere (eg the quick reference sheet) we would have rated the game much less highly and probably wouldn't have bought the rules today. Like I said before, there are loads of other skirmish games on the market.
