Can anybody explain to me the value of group casting? It appears to be very situational as far as I can tell but was wondering if anyone has any practical experience.

Also if a non disengaged unit in the squad casts a group casting, can an engaged unit be part of it?

Use of Group Casting: Knowing for sure its result will be consistent. You make only one roll for the Casting (Focus) the Squad is going to do, instead of doing it piecemeal. Its a gamble essentially, if the roll is a 50/50 for example, a Squad of 4 will only get 2 successfully cast, on average. Where if you use the Group Casting and your lucky the entire squad receives the results (all or nothing).

I'm not certain what you mean by the second question.
Group Casting does not prohib use if engaged in CA.
Neither does Casting in general.
Nor does any Group Casting foci I can immediately think of.

That said, Units of a Squad with Group Casting, who cannot attempt the casting for whatever reason, do not participate in the Group Casting.

Perhaps I am showing my ignorance on this then.

If a unit is in CA can he/she cast spells while in combat? Could I for example spend an AP to attack and then spend a second to cast a Focus or Psychogenic?

Generically speaking can spells be cast while in combat?

I hesitate to say it this simply, but:

General Rule of Thumb: Unless the Casting rules specifally state otherwise, treat each Casting as you would a Weapon Group.

You will notice some castings have ranges of "CA" or "Self" -- These castings are not restricted from Close Assault. Obviously, in fact, a Casting with a "CA" range could ONLY be cast when enganged in Close Assault. :?

Those with only Genesis as their rule book should take a close look at the errata. The entire Casting section has been re-written for Essence and presented there in its entirity to clear up some of the confusion they have caused in the past.
