While at Warfair this weekend (yes, I owe a battle report . . . ) Kyle and I played a modern Iraq game put on by the Miniature Building Authority in support of their Middle Eastern Building line. Kyle, who has been in the market for a gently used vehicle for his Skarrd, capable of surviving in the harsh world of DA, noticed the vehicle of his dreams. The vehicle was a resin model of the new Army Cougar done by the Hobby Armor Depot http://hobbyarmordepot.homestead.com/. I have a few notes to add at this point. First, some questions have been raised on TMP about HAD's models as being copies and that the service is sometimes not very good, but I have been communicating with Joe of HAD today and got nothing but fast responses to my questions. In regards to copies, no one else I know of has either Cougar or Stryker models, so not idea who you could have copies for these, so that seems to be a moot point. Second, the models are not Forge World quality, but they are fine for Wargame quality and paint up well. For the price they seem very hard to beat. Bellow are some pictures of the Cougar 4x4 and 6x6 as well as the Stryker. I just got a message from Joe that he is also working on a new CHEETAH model that will be out soon and would be great for games like DA. (Oh, the turret versions of the Cougar are not yet available . . .)

If you want to order from Joe, use the email on the website and tell him what you want and ask for a price with shipping. He has some discounts for PayPal and a February sale that he can figure into the order total and tell you what to pay via PayPal. Not hitech, but what the hell.

Cougar 4x4 and 6x6 (Price between $20 and $22 each)

Ok, I got four vehicles today from Joe at Hobby Armor Depot. I will say that the customer service was great, but you need to email him your potential order, get it approved (in stock, discounts, shipping etc.) and then make payment via PayPal. The quality is not Forge World (or even close) and it does appear that he is using something as a model where he filled in the under cuts so he could form a mold. There are lots of bubbles and other issues, but over all, I am looking for a wargame model, not a showcase piece. If I want perfect, I can go elsewhere and pay more for one vehicle than all four of the ones I ordered, including shipping. They look a lot better painted, as Kyle and I both can attest. Joe did say that all his prices go up in April when he has to buy more resin (resin price went up a lot), but stock on hand will be the old price until they sell out. Limited supply on these vehicles since they are high demand. I also got a Cougar 6x6 with turret that I did not picture.

For about $20 for a resin vehicle, I'm not complaining. I just ordered five more modern vehicles to flesh out my collection of items needed for Iraq. My Army and Marine forces are finally up to date and ready to roll.

I like the Cougars, they look tough and can be a Forsaken truck with a little mod minus the turret, we just have one tow a methane tank or something, any ideas on that Jeff :)

Now I am gonna go order some, damn you Jeff. :)

They look cool. :D  :D Must buy!

Jeff wanted me to tell all that I was not actually planning on having my Skarrd ride around in something so high tech. I may convert some Skarrd giant beetle cavalry but I digress.

I have been wanting some vehicles to do a Skarrd attack the salt nomad/Forsaken scenario I want to do as a con showpiece event. Basically the convoy is stalled in the middle of the board. The Forsaken have to get the convoy going again and have to use action points as well as key individuals such as the weapon smith to get the convoy going again. More and more Skarrd arrive each round and there is a time limit.

When I get a Cesspool figure I will do the same thing but in a swamp with St. John and the Brood.

Glad to help you spend some money. I would suggest looking for an Ork tank from the Wartrak with the flame thrower. Any kind of tank with some wheels added would work.

Sorry, Kyle said Forsaken, not Skarrd. Hard to think of Kyle doing anything but Skarrd.

I just e-mailed Joe about the trucks!

I was just looking at my supply closet and noticed all the 1/48 scale Tamiya Jerry Can sets. They have gas cans and barrels that could be added to the vehicles. There is also a 1/48 stowage set for the WWII tanks that could be used. Just add some hoses to the barrels and you can claim they have any number of fuels in them.

Oh, Hobby Lobby has all their Diorama and train scenery supplies on sales this week for 25% off. Just remembered.

Guys,

I have been in contact with Joe at Hobby Armor Depot and done a little (or a lot) of trading so my force of 28mm modern vehicles has grow dramatically. My insurgent forces just got ten technicals (trucks and light half tracks with anything from heavy machine guns to TOWs and Recoiless Rifles) and my Americans have a fleet of light armor. The latest releases from Joe include his Cheetah model as well as updates to the Stryker and Cougar featuring remote gun systems (M2 50 cal and Mk19 AGL). Since some of you are interested in these I am providing pictures of the Cheetah and the remote guns on the Cougar. I know Joe is waiting on a new batch of resin, so these may be a couple of weeks from shipping.

Jeff

(P.S. @ Grafter, I plan to take a stab at cutting some foam as we discussed for the floating terrain, but have not had a chance yet due to family and work. Will let you know whan I have a chance to try.)

Forgot to mention that the Russian BTR 152 would make a rather good vehicle since you can use it to carry troops in the back that can fire over the sides. I can see one of these full of Coil rushing to the action. Some of the Land Rover vehicles could be made a little more futuristic if you wanted.

Kind of like the movie mad max when they are trying to leave the refinery?

Sorry for the OT, but what is that robot thing in the second batch of pictures? Is it some sort of conversion? Or from a line I have not seen?

That is an Areas suit from the Vor game system FASA used to make. It was their version of a dreadnought. I think Iron Wind Metals is still making them.

We get OT a lot around here Carlo. Plus lots of the original Dark Agers were Vor fans and players.

shoot if I remember correctly, all the original staff were ex VORites. And didn't some of them work on the VOR rules? I believe the DarkAge rules started out as a modified VOR rules and have grown to what they are today. I might h ave the story a bit mixed up, but I think that was the skinny back in 2002? (holy crap has it been that long?)

All I know is that VOR roXXord my face! Too bad it went the way of FASA! :D

Maybe that's why Dark Age rocks so hard! :D

Wanted to start a Shard force, but the game died before I got around to it.

OK, Inspired by the pictures of Jeff's historical painted vehicles. I got the first of mine finished last night. And by finished I mean the painting is done. I gloss coated it this morning and will apply some decals, another gloss cote and then Dull cote and post pictures. The decals are just little safety inspection things I bought from Hasslefree a while back. They are colored triangles and diamonds and such like you see on the side of storage tanks and transports.

OK. Here are some pics. I wanted it to look like the colors on my Forsaken force. The idea behind my Forsaken is that military equipment on the planet was mostly green so the Forsaken paint stuff up green not so much as camouflage but as tradition.

That looks really good. Mine or rather bland in a very military way. I like the blue windows, they add some nice contrast, along with the colors on the hood and a few of the bedrolls. Very nice job indeed. I just got a couple of Warriors, Predator UAVs and am waiting on some Raven UAVs (the size that an infantry man tosses up in the air and flies with a small laptop).

If all goes well, I plan to work on some Americans in Digital camo this weekend, but still trying to figure out the proper base color. I currently an using Tamyia Buff, but think I need to use Vallejo Iraqi Sand or Buff.

Glad to see your Forsaken are now motorized and ready to roll. Now you just need rules for running down enemy models!

Later,

Jeff
