I don't recall one and I can't find it now but that doesn't mean there wasn't one. Here's a tutorial by Racel for making trees from way back, not exactly what you want perhaps but maybe it will have some helpful ideas in it.

Not to necro a possibly dead thread, but I just saw this post. Here is what I used on the bases of several of my figures and to make some terrain. Excellent cacti from the IMEX Alamo set!

I have seen that set a few times and have wondered if it is soft of hard plastic. My bet is soft plastic as Imex does soft plastic 20mm miniatures. Not bad stuff but not the One True Scale.
