• Interview With an Immortal

Since 2008, Dark Age has held the much lauded and heavily sought after March to Immortality tournament circuit. Each year (with 2010 being the exception) a single skilled or lucky player has crawled and climbed to the top of a pile of vanquished foes to be crowned as one of Dark Age’s Immortals. These Immortals, transformed into game play pieces by the Dark Age staff, fought hard to get where they have – they earned their place in our story.

Now however, we want to look at their story. We took a closer look at our Immortals and asked them a few questions about how their journey down the road to Immortality treated them, and what the tournament circuit was like in their experiences.

Today we are going to have a little chat with Jonathan Wojcik, the winner of the 2009 March to Immortality and the inspiration for the insidious John Woe.

    ------------------------------

Bryan Steele: Hey Jon! Thanks for taking the time to talk to us today about your experience with the Dark Age and the March to Immortality. With Adepticon and its March to Immortality Qualifier right around the corner, we figured you and the other past winners who have been immortalized in the game might have some fun insight for the masses. First and foremost, how did it feel to win the March to Immortality in 2009?
    *
Jonathan Wojcik:*It felt great. It was a long time coming since I had lost my shot the year before*to Hoj. "Make sure you always remember all of your models abilities or it can cost you the game and possibly immortality."
    *
BS: I know it was a few years ago, but do you remember some of*the matches on YOUR road to Immortality? How tough was*your competition?
    *
JW: Going against Hoj again round one was tough. He had retired the Mark gun line and was playing his Outcasts; not much better but lucky for me he hadn't really played a lot of games with it so Hoj was still rusty on what some models could do. Guess it was payback for my rules the year before.
    *
BS: Did any opponent or specific force stand out as your greatest foe to overcome?
    *
JW: Hoj I was worried to fight, but Air Caste I knew would be a hard fought, uphill fight.
    *
BS: What was your force like? Did you have a particular goal in mind when you were building it?
    *
JW: I built a Johann force with activations in mind. If you can out-activate your opponent, then you can leave your important moves till last when he or she can't react to them.
    *
BS: Other than*getting the win*in the finals, what was your shining moment along the way?
    *
JW:*When a Grafter singlehandedly took out the Air Caste*Soul Warden*after watching his Warwind bodyguard take a dirt nap.
    *
BS: How did you decide to help*create Jon Woe, and what sort of input did you have on his design?
    *
JW:*I mainly wanted to create*Jon Woe because we need all of Team Jersey to have their own guys, but also because Skarrd really needed a front line attack model that wasn't a huge beast (Warwind, Raze, Abomination). In the end he ended up more Grafter then Warwind, but he can still hold his own in a fight.
    *
BS: Are you currently playing any Dark Age for 2012's March to Immortality?
    *
JW:*We are planning on trying to hold one in New Jersey come May or June once I get back from my wedding.
    *
BS: Oh, congratulations on the pending nuptials! What sort of force list have you been using this year?
    *
JW:*That my dear friends is a secret. I will tell you though that it is Skarrd related...
    *
BS: Ooh! Sneaky! Any advice you'd like to give to everyone walking along the Road to Immortality in Dark Age: Apocalypse along with you?
    *
JW:*Always remember what your models can do and what your mission is; you play your opponent as a second thought.

*BS: Hey, thanks for your time, Jonathan, we’ll see you in August at GenCon I hope! Perhaps you will be the first player to ever achieve double-immortality…or one of the loyal fans reading this will be the one to topple you!
