A DOCTOR has told of the desperate efforts to save Australian icon Steve Irwin after the Crocodile Hunter was struck in the chest by a stingray barb today.

Irwin, 44, died this morning after being fatally injured while filming a nature documentary off Queensland.

The news has shocked the nation and prompted a rush of tributes from politicians and the public alike.

Irwin's wife Terri was in Tasmania at the time of the tragedy and had to be contacted by police with the terrible news.

The couple's daughter Bindi, 8, was with her father in north Queensland, Irwin's director and producer John Stainton said from Cairns.

It is sad when anyone dies, especially for the kids he left. However its not like this was entirely surprising. He made his career out of dangerous animals, he tested how far he could push his luck and in the end it ran out. It seems to me that people are either terrified or lackadaisical when it comes to the natural world.
I live in an area with lots of mountains, highly changeable weather, deep gorges, peat bogs and beautiful scenery. Every day I see people who are horrified by the

its very sad to lose him. i remember being little and watching his show every night, he was one of my heroes! anyhow, i think what we really lost was an environmentalist who fought for the less than cute and cuddly animals (saving dolphins and whales is great, but there are other endangered animals). But not only that, steve actually had sway of many many people, when steve would be on his show dodging pit vipers or whatever it was he was trying to hold, people would actually watch and listen to what he had to say, and some even took it too heart.

but really, this freakish and bizarre death was incredibly fitting to the crocodile hunter,

Just like care races, people watch it to see good crashes, I don't care what they say... and you know this is bound to happen... with that said, he will be missed.

Just to think that my wife went to the Caymans few years back and swam and fed a bunch of stingrays. You can never tell with wildlife...

I remember that Fed-ex commercial he did, funny, he somewhat went out the same way 'cept underwater. I liked his shows, they were informative if not very dramatic at the same time.
